HOW IT WORKS
Inspired to Act Education for Awareness Empowered to Serve
The Promise Project aims to engage and empower youth to create a service based learning project that addresses and helps solve the critical issues that put youth at risk in their school or community. Youth pick an area they are passionate about and implement a team project with a chance to win $5000 for their charity or to further their Promise Project.
1. DISCOVER THE PROMISE PROJECT
Inspired by our walk across Canada, The Promise Project focuses on youth, and aims to inspire, educate and empower them in developing a project to address an issue affecting youth within their communities. Students will have an opportunity to submit their project as part of a contest that will occur in the last two months of the school year. Up to 10 projects will win a $5000 grant to support their local charity or further their project.
The Promise Project blends leadership lessons with community service. These innovative leadership lessons are integrated easily into any subject area and all class or club settings. Designed to teach young people how to lead and serve, The Promise Project is available at no cost to educators or youth club advisers.
Throughout this leadership program, students will work through leadership lessons. Every registered project will receive the tools they need to be successful. Once project requirements are fulfilled each project team will be invited to “pitch” their presentation idea via video in a “Dragons Den” type of evaluation to a diverse community panel that will judge each project on key criteria listed in the lessons.
Any youth can participate in The Promise Project. For example, entries could be submitted by individuals, groups of youth, student clubs, classes, teams, etc. from both inside or outside of the school environment as long as they have an adult leading the project.

3. CREATE YOUR PROMISE PROJECT TEAM
Teams can be any group of at least three individuals who could be from the same classroom in a school, college or university or who are members of a local club or service agency. Be inclusive in creating your team. In addition, each team (involving members aged 18 and under) must be sponsored by a classroom teacher or adult supervisor. There is no limit to the size of the team. Teams can only submit one entry per school year.
4. EXPLORE ISSUES AFFECTING YOUTH HOMELESSNESS IN YOUR COMMUNITY
Identify issues in your school or community that limit youth or make them at risk of youth homelessness. Learn about the root causes of youth homelessness here.
5. PLAN YOUR PROMISE
Create and execute a Promise Project that attempts to solve the identified local issue or problem in need. Develop an action plan to achieve the goal. If there is an existing local charity that aligns with your project, visit and work with them on your ideas. Identify them as the charity that will win $5000 should your project be chosen in the final contest or create a project in your school or community and outline exactly how the $5000 will be spent to further this project should you win.
